Rendlesham Forest

Site of the December 1980 Rendlesham Forest incident, the most documented military UAP encounter in British history.

Over several nights in late December 1980, United States Air Force personnel stationed at the twin bases of RAF Woodbridge and RAF Bentwaters reported unexplained lights and an object in the adjacent forest. What sets the case apart from most UAP reports is its paper trail. Deputy base commander Lieutenant Colonel Charles Halt recorded an official memo to the Ministry of Defence describing the events, and separately made an audio recording in the forest as the second night unfolded. Both survive, and both are part of the public record.

That documentation makes Rendlesham Britain’s best-evidenced military encounter of its kind, but it does not settle what was seen. Proposed explanations have ranged from the nearby Orfordness lighthouse and a bright re-entering object to misperception under stress; witnesses have maintained that none of these accounts the whole of what they observed.

We treat the case as a documented event with a contested cause. We hold the testimony and the surviving records against the proposed explanations, note where a conventional account fits and where it falls short, and cite the memo, the tape, and the witness statements directly rather than the retellings built upon them.
