The Gold-Digging Ants of Persia
Around 430 BCE the Greek historian Herodotus recorded that a sandy desert of northern India, within the Persian empire, was home to gold-throwing ants "smaller than dogs but bigger than foxes" whose spoil the local Indians raided on fast camels. Later Greek and Roman writers repeated and embroidered the account for six centuries. The dominant modern reading, advanced by the French ethnologist Michel Peissel, is that the "ants" were gold-flecked-spoil-throwing Himalayan marmots.

Mokele-mbembe
Mokele-mbembe is a large, long-necked, reptilian animal reported from the swamps and rivers of the northern Republic of the Congo, which some cryptozoologists have interpreted as a surviving sauropod dinosaur. The written record runs from an 18th-century missionary account in 1776 through a much-quoted 1913 German colonial expedition report to a wave of dedicated expeditions in the 1980s. No physical specimen, verified photograph, or government or scientific confirmation has ever been produced.

The 1991 Mexican UFO Wave
On the eleventh of July 1991, during the longest total solar eclipse of the twentieth century, numerous observers in and around Mexico City filmed a stationary or slow-moving object in the eclipse-darkened daytime sky. Journalist Jaime Maussan aggregated the amateur footage on national television within about a week, catalysing a multi-year Mexican UFO "wave"; the leading conventional explanation is that most of the videos captured the planet Venus, which was documented shining at magnitude −4.8 during totality.

The Bashplemi Tablet
The Bashplemi Tablet is a small vesicular-basalt slab found near Lake Bashplemi in Georgia's Dmanisi municipality in the autumn of 2021, bearing sixty inscribed signs — thirty-nine of them distinct — in seven rows that match no known writing system. It was formally described in a 2024 peer-reviewed paper by a five-author Georgian team, who tentatively date it to the Late Bronze / Early Iron Age and argue it is authentic. The script remains undeciphered, the dating is indirect, and several outside linguists have publicly questioned both its age and its authenticity.

The Wilson-Davis memo is a fifteen-page set of handwritten notes attributed to the physicist Dr Eric W. Davis, dated the sixteenth of October 2002, purporting to record Admiral Thomas R. Wilson describing being denied access in 1997 to a compartmented UAP crash-retrieval and reverse-engineering programme. The document physically exists and was entered into the U.S. congressional record in 2022, but its contents are unauthenticated and its authenticity is contested — Wilson calls it fiction, while other named figures have variously affirmed the account or declined comment.

Project Palladium
Project Palladium was a Cold War CIA electronic-warfare programme, founded around 1960 by engineer S. Eugene "Gene" Poteat, that intercepted an enemy radar's own signal, passed it through a variable delay line, and re-transmitted it to inject fully controllable "ghost aircraft" into Soviet and Soviet-client air-defence radars. Its existence rests on Poteat's own published firsthand accounts and a declassified CIA Studies in Intelligence article; the popular claim that Palladium "manufactured UFOs" is a secondary interpretation Poteat's accounts do not make.

The 1954 French UFO Wave — the Saint-Rémy Landing Where the Occupant "Spoke Russian"
On the night of the twentieth to twenty-first of October 1954, during an intense autumn wave of French UFO reports, construction worker Louis (Lazlo) Ujvari said an armed occupant of a small grounded craft at Saint-Rémy in the Vosges addressed him and, when he answered in Russian, conversed with him in Russian before the craft rose and departed. The case survives only through contemporaneous 1954 newspaper coverage and official questioning; it was never physically corroborated and remains a witness-testimony case.

The Thylacine — Persistent Sightings of the 'Extinct' Tasmanian Tiger
The thylacine, Tasmania's striped marsupial predator, is officially extinct — the last known captive died at Hobart Zoo on the seventh of September 1936 and the species was declared extinct in 1986. Yet reported sightings never stopped: a Tasmanian government file released under Right to Information logs seven fresh eyewitness reports between December 2016 and August 2019, every one officially assessed as "inconclusive".

Bob Lazar, S-4 and Element 115
In May and November 1989, Las Vegas television station KLAS-TV broadcast interviews by reporter George Knapp with a man — first disguised as "Dennis", later named as Robert "Bob" Lazar — who said he had worked at a facility he called S-4, near Area 51, reverse-engineering extraterrestrial craft powered by a stable superheavy element with atomic number 115. Element 115 was later synthesised for real and named moscovium, but the isotopes produced survive for tens of milliseconds, not indefinitely. The claim of a reverse-engineering programme rests on Lazar's testimony alone; the US Department of Defense reported in March 2024 that it found no empirical evidence for any such programme.

The 1983 "Energy Balloon" Consciousness-Projection Document
The widely-shared "1983 CIA energy balloon document" is two records, not one. The build instructions for the "Resonant Energy Balloon" appear in a 1977 Monroe Institute training workbook; the 1983 item is a US Army INSCOM assessment of the Gateway Process by LTC Wayne M. McDonnell, which describes the same technique as a protective measure for anyone attempting an out-of-body state. Both were declassified in the CIA's 2003 release of the STARGATE archive.

The Count of Saint-Germain was a real eighteenth-century courtier, musician, chemist and diplomat of unknown origin who moved through the courts of London, Paris, The Hague and Schleswig between roughly 1745 and 1784, and who let it be believed he was centuries old. His death is recorded in the church register of St. Nicolai, Eckernförde, on the twenty-seventh of February 1784. The immortality is legend; the man, his court activity and the bafflement of his contemporaries are documented in letters, diplomatic records and memoirs.

Stephenville Lights
On the evening of the eighth of January 2008, residents around Stephenville and Dublin in rural Erath County, Texas reported a large, silent, brightly lit object moving at high speed. A civilian radar study drawing on FAA and National Weather Service data obtained under the Freedom of Information Act reported an uncorrelated target that at one point tracked toward President George W. Bush's Crawford ranch. The U.S. Air Force first said no military aircraft were airborne, then confirmed F-16 training flights; the object itself was never officially identified.

Erdställe — Europe's Enigmatic Medieval Tunnels
Erdställe are narrow, hand-dug underground passages found across Central Europe and most commonly attributed to the medieval period; their original purpose remains genuinely unresolved by scholarship. The most recent primary-documented example was excavated in late 2025 at Reinstedt in Saxony-Anhalt, where a late-medieval Erdstall was found cut into a Neolithic burial enclosure. The state archaeology office announced the find on the twenty-ninth of January 2026 and set out three competing interpretations without choosing between them.

In 1990, gravel quarrying in Griswold, Connecticut exposed an early-19th-century burial in which a middle-aged man's skull and thigh bones had been rearranged into a "skull and crossbones" pattern years after death — an apotropaic act tied to New England's tuberculosis-driven "vampire" folk belief. Brass coffin tacks read "JB55". In 2019 a forensic DNA team identified him, with putative confidence, as John Barber.

Between 1972 and 1987, two overlapping efforts tried to detect a large animal in Loch Ness using sonar and strobe photography — Robert Rines's Academy of Applied Science expeditions and Adrian Shine's 24-boat Operation Deepscan. The instrumentation is documented in granted US patents and the proposed name was published in Nature, but the biological interpretation of every sonar contact remains contested. No primary source in this file confirms a large unknown animal.

The Montana UFO Film (Great Falls)
On the fifteenth of August 1950, Nick Mariana, general manager of the Great Falls minor-league baseball team, filmed roughly sixteen seconds of 16mm colour footage showing two silvery objects crossing the sky — among the earliest surviving motion-picture footage of a reported UFO. The film was examined by the US Air Force, the 1953 Robertson Panel and the University of Colorado (Condon) study, which catalogued it as Case 47. Condon's analyst concluded that aircraft "strain credibility" as an explanation, while conceding they could not be entirely ruled out.

Las Vegas Backyard NHI Encounter
On the night of the thirtieth of April 2023 a bright fireball crossed the skies over the US Southwest and was independently logged by the American Meteor Society. About an hour later a Las Vegas family called 911 to report that eight- to ten-foot non-human beings were standing in their backyard. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police responded, found no physical evidence, and closed the case; the beings rest entirely on witness testimony and a later family cellphone video.

The Fouke Monster
In May 1971 a Fouke resident, Bobby Ford, reported that a large hairy bipedal creature attacked him at his home in Miller County, Arkansas. The Texarkana Gazette's reporting coined the name "Fouke Monster" and the story was carried nationally by the wire services; the 1972 docudrama The Legend of Boggy Creek then fixed the legend in popular culture. No government, scientific, or forensic source has ever confirmed the creature's existence.

The Tombstone Thunderbird and the "Lost" 1890 Photograph
In April 1890 the Tombstone Epitaph printed a news item claiming two ranchers shot a giant winged creature with a wingspan of roughly 160 feet on the desert between the Huachuca and Whetstone mountains. No photograph accompanied that article — the paper could not print photographs in 1890 — yet since a 1963 magazine retelling, many people, including the cryptozoologist Ivan T. Sanderson and the author John Keel, have insisted they remember seeing one. No such photograph has ever been produced, which makes this a case about memory rather than a documented zoological event.

Father Crespi's Missing Gold Artifacts of Cuenca

After a fire in 1962 and his death in 1982, the surviving collection passed to the Central Bank of Ecuador; the inscribed plates have never been publicly re-exhibited, catalogued by mainstream archaeology, or authenticated. Los Alamos Green Fireballs and Project Twinkle
Between late 1948 and 1951, brilliant green fireballs were repeatedly observed on near-horizontal, silent paths over New Mexico's most sensitive nuclear installations. The sightings alarmed the Atomic Energy Commission, the FBI and the Air Force enough to convene a secret conference at Los Alamos on the sixteenth of February 1949 and to launch a dedicated observation study, Project Twinkle. Twinkle's final report of November 1951 closed the effort, with the official conclusion that the objects were likely natural in origin.

Project Sign
Project Sign was the United States Air Force's first formal study of unidentified flying objects, run by the Technical Intelligence Division of Air Materiel Command at Wright-Patterson AFB. It evaluated 243 reported sightings and concluded in its February 1949 final report that no definite and conclusive evidence was yet available that would prove or disprove the objects as real aircraft of unknown configuration. The report is declassified and publicly available; the far more famous "Estimate of the Situation" said to have preceded it is not, and its existence rests on testimony rather than on any retrievable document.

Most records were destroyed on the order of CIA Director Richard Helms in 1973; the programme became public through the 1975 Rockefeller Commission and Church Committee, and roughly 20,000 surviving financial pages were released after a 1977 FOIA discovery. It is a closed, declassified historical programme — no successor of the same name operates.

Thomas Mantell Incident
On the seventh of January 1948, Captain Thomas F. Mantell of the Kentucky Air National Guard died when his F-51D Mustang broke up during a high-altitude climb in pursuit of an unidentified object seen over Godman Army Airfield, Fort Knox. The US Air Force attributed his death to oxygen deprivation; Project Blue Book later identified the object as a then-classified Skyhook research balloon. The case survives in the Blue Book files held by the US National Archives and is one of the earliest deaths connected to a UFO sighting.

The Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis
The Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis is a contested scientific theory, first published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2007, that one or more extraterrestrial objects exploded over or struck northern North America approximately 12,900 years ago, contributing to abrupt cooling, megafaunal extinction and the decline of the Clovis culture. Nearly two decades on it remains unresolved: proponents cite a boundary layer of platinum, microspherules and nanodiamonds across several continents, while a 2023 multi-author review concluded the hypothesis "should be rejected". The Wilbert Smith Memo (1950)
On the twenty-first of November 1950, Wilbert B. Smith, a senior radio engineer at Canada's Department of Transport, wrote a memorandum titled "Geo-Magnetics" recommending a classified study of flying saucers. Reporting discreet inquiries made through the Canadian Embassy in Washington, Smith wrote that saucers were real and were "the most highly classified subject in the United States Government." In January 1996, residents of Varginha in Minas Gerais, Brazil, reported seeing one or more strange humanoid creatures and a UFO, and alleged that the Brazilian military captured a being. It is Brazil's most heavily documented UFO case: Army military-police inquiries were opened in 1997 and transferred to the Arquivo Nacional, and as of 2025–2026 the affair is the subject of a formal U.S. congressional records push.

Clairvius Narcisse — the Documented Haitian "Zombie"
Clairvius Narcisse was a Haitian man pronounced dead and buried in 1962 near Deschapelles who, in 1980, reappeared alive and was recognised by his family — making him the case most often cited as a potentially verifiable "zombie." His account drove the ethnobotanist Wade Davis's search for a Vodou "zombie powder" containing the neurotoxin tetrodotoxin, a hypothesis that remains contested and unproven. The only peer-reviewed clinical study of Haitian "zombies" examined three different people and concluded that misidentification of the mentally ill was the likeliest explanation.

Universe 25 was a mouse-population experiment run by the ethologist John B. Calhoun at the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health, begun on the ninth of July 1968 with four breeding pairs in an enclosure of unlimited food, water and space. The colony grew to roughly 2,200 mice, then suffered total social breakdown and went extinct. The experiment is genuine and peer-published, but its popular framing as proof of human "societal decay" is interpretation, not finding.

Six decades on it remains both undebunked and unconfirmed: journal analyses argue the subject is a non-human primate, named individuals claim it was a costume hoax, and no government or court record adjudicates the question.

The Alleged UAP "Legacy" Crash-Retrieval Program
In sworn testimony to a US House Oversight subcommittee on the twenty-sixth of July 2023, former intelligence officer David Grusch stated he had been informed of a multi-decade UAP crash-retrieval and reverse-engineering programme, and that "non-human" craft and "biologics" had been recovered — but he gave no specifics in open session and said his knowledge came from interviewing others, not personal observation. The US government's own All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) reported in March 2024 that it found no empirical evidence any such programme ever recovered or reverse-engineered off-world technology. It has never been the subject of an official or peer-reviewed investigation; every named expert in the available record reads it as a natural glacial deposit, and no scientific source supports an artificial origin.

Derinkuyu Underground City
Derinkuyu is a multi-level subterranean settlement carved into soft volcanic tuff in the Cappadocia region of central Anatolia, descending as far as 85 metres through as many as 18 levels. Peer-reviewed engineering studies report it could have sheltered on the order of 20,000 people; it was rediscovered in 1963 during the reconstruction of a house and opened to visitors in 1969. On the fourth of September 1971 an official Costa Rican government aerial-mapping aircraft automatically photographed a disc-shaped opaque object over Lago de Coté, though no one aboard saw anything. A peer-reviewed analysis by Richard F. Haines and Jacques F. Vallée found no evidence of double exposure or fabrication but could not identify the object, which remains contested.

U.S. Military 'Psychic Warfare' and Psychotronics Programs
From 1972 to 1995 the U.S. intelligence community funded a documented effort to test whether "remote viewing" could collect intelligence, a programme that ended its life as the Defense Intelligence Agency's STAR GATE. The CIA-commissioned 1995 evaluation by the American Institutes for Research found laboratory effects statistically significant but operationally useless and recommended termination. In parallel, U.S. Army officers publicly theorised about offensive "psychotronic" mind-influence weapons.

Jack Parsons (1914–1952) was a self-taught rocket chemist central to the Caltech group that became NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, who also led a Pasadena Thelemic occult order. He lost his Top Secret clearance in 1952 after an FBI investigation into documents removed from Hughes Aircraft, and died on the seventeenth of June 1952 in an explosion in his home laboratory, attributed by authorities to fulminate of mercury. Murder and suicide theories persist but are unsupported by any primary record located here.

USS Nimitz 2004 "Tic-Tac" UAP Encounter
On the fourteenth of November 2004, aircrew from the USS Nimitz Carrier Strike Group operating off Southern California reported and recorded an unidentified white, oblong object during a pre-deployment exercise. One F/A-18 weapons-system officer captured roughly seventy-six seconds of infrared footage, later named "FLIR1", which the U.S. Department of Defense officially released on the twenty-seventh of April 2020, stating the phenomena it shows remain "unidentified". As of AARO's March 2024 review the U.S. government has not publicly identified the object.
