X-ray and CT scanning since the 2000s have revealed at least 30 interlocking gears modelling lunar and planetary motion. The mechanism’s sophistication has no surviving contemporaries until the 14th century.

Of all the entries in this file, the Antikythera mechanism is the one we hold up not as a puzzle of doubtful provenance but as a marvel that is entirely real. Sponge divers recovered its corroded fragments from a shipwreck off Antikythera in 1901, and a century of investigation — most notably by the Antikythera Mechanism Research Project and the work of Tony Freeth and colleagues — has established beyond serious dispute that it is a genuine geared analogue computer of the second century BCE. There is no electricity here, no anachronism, and no need for embellishment; the documentary and physical record speaks plainly.

What unsettles is precisely that it is accepted science. The device tracked the positions of the Sun and Moon, predicted eclipses, modelled the irregular lunar orbit through a pin-and-slot arrangement, and may have displayed the planets, all by means of bronze gearing of a refinement that has no surviving successor for well over a thousand years. We catalogue it here because it stands as a standing rebuke to easy assumptions about what the ancient world could and could not build. Where the evidence is firm, we say so — and on this artefact the evidence is firmer than on almost any other the period has left us.
