Angels

Reports of angelic encounters are documented continuously across Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions, with modern accounts often involving rescue or warning interventions.

The angel — from the Greek angelos, simply “messenger” — is among the most thoroughly textualised entities in this archive. Its trail runs through the Hebrew scriptures, the Gospels, the Qur’an, and the vast commentarial literature that grew around them, and it carries with it a developed hierarchy and taxonomy: the seraphim and cherubim, the named archangels Michael and Gabriel, the guardian figure assigned to the individual soul. We treat this material as a record of belief and testimony, not as a register of confirmed beings. What can be documented is what was written, by whom, and when; the encounter behind the text remains, by its nature, beyond verification.

Modern accounts tend to depart from the theological tradition. They cluster around moments of crisis — the roadside rescue, the warning voice, the calming presence at a deathbed — and are frequently reported by people with no prior expectation of such an experience. Where these narratives admit of more ordinary explanation, whether the dissociative effects of acute stress, the reconstructive habits of memory, or the human readiness to find pattern and agency in ambiguity, we note it plainly. Where they do not, we record the testimony as given, attributed and dated, and leave the question open. The archive’s task here is custody of the account, not adjudication of the messenger.
