Frequently associated with UAP encounter narratives but also reported in non-UAP contexts. The canonical investigative work is Budd Hopkins’ 1981 study of the same name.
Missing time is a recurring feature of abduction testimony, and the case most often cited is that of Betty and Barney Hill, who in 1961 reported a stretch of their journey through New Hampshire for which they could give no continuous account. We frame such episodes as reported experience: what a witness recalls, what they cannot, and how the gap was later described or reconstructed, frequently under hypnosis. The leading explanations are not exotic. Lapses of conscious chronology are consistent with sleep states and microsleep, with dissociation and highway hypnosis, and with the ordinary unreliability of time estimation under stress, while hypnotic recovery is itself a documented source of confabulated detail rather than a reliable window onto lost hours.
We catalogue each report against whatever external markers exist, such as odometer readings, timepieces, and the testimony of others, and we cite that trail in every entry. Where a conventional account of fatigue, dissociation, or misjudged duration fits, we say so. Where a gap is genuinely documented and not so explained, we record it as an open question, neither dismissed nor presented as evidence of anything beyond the missing time itself.

The Betty and Barney Hill Encounter
On the night of the nineteenth to twentieth of September 1961, Betty and Barney Hill reported an unidentified object while driving south on US Route 3 through the White Mountains, and could not account for roughly two hours of the journey. The sighting was logged through Pease AFB into Project Blue Book, where the stated conclusion moved through several explanations before settling on "insufficient data". The abduction narrative itself emerged later, in hypnosis sessions conducted in 1963–64.

The Kelly Cahill Encounter
In the early hours of the eighth of August 1993, Kelly Cahill reported that she, her husband and their three children encountered a large illuminated craft and tall dark humanoid figures on the road home through the Dandenong foothills, and lost roughly an hour of time. The case is celebrated for an alleged independent corroboration by witnesses in a second vehicle — but the investigation report said to contain that corroboration has never been released in the thirty-three years since, and no primary document supporting the event has been located.
