Aliens // Greys
Greys
Short, grey-skinned, large-eyed reported alien morphology — the dominant cultural image of the alien since the 1980s.
ALSO KNOWN AS: Zeta Reticulans · Roswell Greys · The Greys
Reported small grey-skinned beings with large black eyes are the most-reported single morphology in modern UFO abduction literature. Hill case (1961) is the canonical opening entry.
The reported morphology is consistent across decades of accounts: a short stature, smooth grey or grey-brown skin, an enlarged cranium, a diminished nose and mouth, and the defining feature — large, black, almond-shaped eyes. The form first entered the documentary record in detail through the Betty and Barney Hill case of 1961, retrieved under hypnosis and later published in John Fuller’s account, and it crystallised into the dominant cultural image of the alien through the abduction literature of the 1980s, particularly the work of Budd Hopkins and the artwork accompanying Whitley Strieber’s testimony.
Whether the consistency reflects a genuine recurring encounter or a shared cultural template now seeded across the public imagination is precisely the open question, and we do not pretend to settle it. Much of the corpus is testimony, frequently hypnotically retrieved, a method whose reliability is itself contested.
We catalogue what is reported — the witnesses, the dates, the circumstances — and we distinguish the documented record from the folklore that has grown around it. Each entry is held against its evidential trail.

The Betty and Barney Hill Encounter
On the night of the nineteenth to twentieth of September 1961, Betty and Barney Hill reported an unidentified object while driving south on US Route 3 through the White Mountains, and could not account for roughly two hours of the journey. The sighting was logged through Pease AFB into Project Blue Book, where the stated conclusion moved through several explanations before settling on "insufficient data". The abduction narrative itself emerged later, in hypnosis sessions conducted in 1963–64.

The Ariel School Encounter
On the morning of the sixteenth of September 1994, around sixty pupils at Ariel School near Ruwa, Zimbabwe, reported that one or more disc-shaped craft descended over the scrub beside their playground and that small dark-clad beings with very large eyes emerged. Interviews and drawings were collected within days by a BBC correspondent and a southern-African investigator, and two months later by a Harvard psychiatrist. No government, military or intelligence record of the event was located; the case rests entirely on witness testimony, contemporaneous journalism and private investigator files, and remains disputed.
